What is the Lechess Club Mentoring Programme?

The Mentor Programme is a  group of volunteers within Lechess club who have agreed to help fellow members analyse their games for nothing more than the pleasure of helping others and the respect we all owe to those who help keep LeChessClub a high-quality educational environment.

What game will a Mentor analyse?

Mentors will look at any game involving Lechess members that has been played under Standard time control conditions.
Blitz or bullet games will not be mentored, neither will standard games where the player has blitzed his moves with no thought of strategy or tactics.

How do I request a Mentor to help me analyse my game?

Requests are made through Lebot, Lechess’ very own BOT, with the ICC command line "Tell Lebot ask".
So a typical request will look like the following example:

Tell Lebot ask Please can someone help explain where I went wrong and lost to Invicta-Knight?

Guidelines for those requesting a Mentor

  • When sending your request it would help if you include details such as lib% of the game or name of the players in your history

  • Avoid one word requests like "game" or "mentor". Mentors are volunteers and deserve some courtesy if they are going to continue supporting the mentor program.

  • Refrain from typing multiple requests. Lebot will keep your request active even if you disconnect from ICC.

  • If you disconnect from ICC a mentor admin may cancel your request.

How promptly will my request get handled?

Sometimes within seconds but sometimes it may take a little longer.
Currently we only have fifteen Mentors.  We aim to expand this group over the coming months but whilst that is happening there may be times when a Mentor is not available to help with your query, so please be patient.

Guidelines for Mentors

  • Mentors should only consider examining standard time control games and refuse requests to examine blitz games and standard games where the player has "blitzed" his moves with no thought of strategy or tactics.
  • Occasionally players requesting a mentor may go offline before the requests are handled.  If this is the case then you should contact one of the non mentor officers who can cancel the requests.
Note 1:  As lebot does not have a cancel command, the non mentor officers may cancel requests that would otherwise contribute to misrepresentation of the statistics.

Note 2:  The primary reason for keeping records is flag off inactive mentors.

How can I become a Mentor?

The Lechess Mentor Programme is always looking for additional mentors to help out.

We are looking for members who have a Standard rating around 2000 or higher, are enthusiastic about helping their Lechess Club colleagues and are active Lechess Club members.

Every application should be accompanied with the name of a Lechess Club official (see our Organisation chart) who has agreed to provide a supporting reference and should be forwarded to saltoflife who will then contact the individual directly.
